Globalism - Ecumenism

Alf Cengia

I've often wondered what it would be like to climb into a time machine and go back to my younger self. Haven't you? What advice would you give your younger self knowing what you know now? Come to think of it, what advice would your future self give your current self, if it could?

One of my favorite movies is Disney's The Kid, which starred Bruce Willis. He probably regrets ever making that movie, but I really liked it. Willis' character (Russ Duritz) is haunted by his younger boy-self. Apparently, the younger Russ has emotional problems - he is a cry baby, has a lisp and is overweight. The grown up Russ figures that his boy-self is there so that he set him right. After all, grown-up Russ is now a high profile self-made man.

As the story progresses, it seems the older Russ doesn't have his life together at all - he only assumes so. He is arrogant, has a nervous facial twitch, is estranged from his father, unmarried at forty, he hasn't grown up to be a pilot and he has no dog! When the younger Russ learns all this he bewails that he has grown up a loser.

But all is not lost. As it turns out, an even older Russ (who has it all together) is the one who intervened to bring the younger and current Russ together so that they could sort it all out. Duritz ends up curing his twitch, makes peace with his father, becomes a pilot, and gets the girl and the dog. And they live happily ever after.

Even so, I do have to wonder if an even older, future Russ than the Russ who engineered the meeting of the two younger selves might have even more sage advice to the three younger Russes. Hope I haven't lost you there.

Can you really trust your future self?

I suspect the movie is indebted to the New Age musings of pilot, writer-philosopher Richard Bach who wrote extensively on these themes. He assumed his Future Self would be more enlightened and wiser. Bach was also convinced he possessed a Higher Divine Self which he tried to access through "spiritual disciplines."

In reality, experience does not always equate to enlightenment or wisdom. Bach's life is littered with marriage failures after writing extensively about finding his soul mate. His Higher Self didn't foresee the marriage breakdowns, or his near fatal plane crash back in 2012.

Wayne Dyer was another person I read extensively. He freely dispensed the same New Age thoughts about life and the "Sacred Self." Dyer often teamed up with his wife Marcie (Marcelene) when writing their wisdom books. He is quoted as saying:

"My beliefs are that the truth is a truth until you organize it, and then becomes a lie. I don't think that Jesus was teaching Christianity, Jesus was teaching kindness, love, concern, and peace. What I tell people is don't be Christian, be Christ-like. Don't be Buddhist, be Buddha-like...Religion is orthodoxy, rules and historical scriptures maintained by people over long periods of time. Generally people are raised to obey the customs and practices of that religion without question. These are customs and expectations from outside the person and do not fit my definition of spiritual." (Emphasis mine)

I don't want to judge Dyer's or Bach's personal lives, yet despite all this "higher" wisdom, they didn't (and don't) have the answers to life's problems. While Dyer is still married to Marcie, they separated in 2003 after twenty years of marriage. Dyer's definition of spirituality didn't entirely originate from within either; it was augmented by his guru. But where did the guru get it?

The same can be said of Bach, Walsch, Winfrey, Tolle and a slew of others who claim life's answers can be found within your Self. In fact, they all got these ideas from somewhere other than themselves.

So what would I tell a younger Alf, given the opportunity? Well, I could tell him lots of good stuff; like he would eventually meet a wonderful lady and move to America. Of course, such detailed information could end up destroying the very fabric of the Space-time Continuum.

In all seriousness, the younger Alf was so immersed in the sort of ideas promoted by Bach and Dyer that he didn't foresee where the world was really heading. He'd begun to scorn doomsday prophets like Hal Lindsay. He'd believed that this world could be getting better, that it wasn't so bad after all.

I'd now tell him to scratch that Utopian dream - it was nothing but fairy dust.

He would soon enjoy a western culture claiming to be tolerant and diverse, yet systematically moving to purge itself from all Christian influences. Christians are barely tolerated as a passing phenomenon.

Despite so-called enlightenment, the abortion industry would become a billion plus dollar growth business. That "utopian" society would soon be pioneering enforced euthanasia, post-natal abortion, sex with consenting minors and sex with non-consenting animals. Critics of Gay Marriage would be ostracized as haters, while traditional marriage would come under fire.

Israel would also be unfairly portrayed as a pariah-state, while any condemnation of Islamists would be seen as Islamophobic. He never thought he'd see the scale of anti-Semitism still growing in this world.

No enlightened guru or analyst ever foresaw the global impacting meltdown we have in the Middle East today. Hal Lindsay did. He didn't get a visit from his future self, either. He had his Bible. I just used a bad word - didn't I?

I tend to be a conspiracy theory Skeptic. Yet as I look back at my New Age years, it's not lost on me that every single one of those books and those self-styled teachers-seers denied Christ and the Bible. They unanimously viewed Bible-believing Christians as unenlightened.

It's also not lost on me how the first failed scientific experiment was conducted in Eden and initiated by a lie. Another failed experiment of sorts occurred at Babel when the nations decided that they wanted to be like God. Both of these experiments involved relying on the Self while rejecting God's revelation.

Scientism still rejects God. Secular scientists plunder concepts from the Twilight Zone to explain a universe that demands a God. They appeal to the mysterious Oort cloud, Dark Matter and an Inflationary Multiverse, just to name a few.

The more complex they realize the universe is, the wilder their ideas to remove God from it. Professor Dan Dennett once posited that the universe created itself ex nihilo - "out of something that was well-nigh indistinguishable from nothing at all."

Young crusading atheists often refer to themselves as "Free Thinkers". I find it ironic that many of them also attach the word dragon to their nom de plumes on debate forums. Yet far from being "Free Thinkers" they've been deceived into accepting any unproven concept that precludes God.

I guess it really is a Cosmic Conspiracy.

Don't believe any visits from future selves. Show them The Door.
