Wrong Place, Wrong Time
In Defense of the Faith

Wendy Wippel

It was 1851, and the sleepy town of Dorchester, Massachusetts, (now a suburb of Boston) were going about there usual business when something  highly unusual happened. So unusual  in fact that, scientists, theologians, archaeologists and mystery hunters still theorize today. Though the answer stares them all in the face.

A report in the science journal, Scientific American, recorded that near Dorset, Massachusetts, an explosive charge at a mining camp near Meeting House Hill—intending to break up a massive rock in order to facilitate road-making, instead shot a delicately decorated, bell-shaped metal dish out of solid rock reported to be 15 feet below the surface.

In a layer of rock estimated to be several million years old.

Two pieces of what appeared to be -- before the blast—some kind of other  metal object were ejected from the blast as well.

The piece stood about 4 and a half inches and about eight inches in diameter, and was inlaid with silver and wreathed, on the lower half, with a vine pattern also inlaid with silver and exquisitely done.

Those present at the time of the explosion (and there were numerous onloookers), thought that the object ejected looked like either a pot or a candlestick: the object eventually  came to be known exclusively in Massachusetts as the Dorchester Pot.

The first newspaper to pick up this strange event in Dorchester suggested, tongue in cheek, that the bell-shaped object may have been made by Tubal-Cane, Identified in Scripture, as the first metal worker (Genesis 4:22). (Which also means that Tubal Cane was the first resident of Dorset, which seems rather unlikely).

But let’s move on.

Another magazine writer featured the “Dorchester pot”, as it came to be called, in an article entitled, “Extraterrestrial Visitations from Prehistoric Times to the Present".

Ancient America Magazine, (one I read occasionally) has attempted to keep track of this archaeological artifact. In 2001, the magazine recorded that the Dorchester Pot was owned by a man named Dennis Ballard, who had bought it from a Harvard employee that eventually confessed that he had stolen it from a closet in a Harvard lab.  As far as I can tell no one knows who has it now, but one individual has apparently managed to do some sophisticated testing of the object and has determined that it is 600 billion years old.

That’s what he said.

Here’s my  point. Have these people never read Genesis? It would be one thing, I guess, if this was a complete anomaly on our home planet, but hundreds of these out of place artifacts have been discovered, all over the world.

So many that they have an official name. Out of place (in time and/or location)Artifacts.   Abbreviated OOParts.

Scientists don’t have a clue how the Dorchester Pot, a relatively modern object, compared to the history of the earth, got what seems to be multi-millions of years down in the geologic record.  But the Bible does. The Great flood, shortly after God made man, sent much of what man made (in God’s image and therefore endowed with intelligence), made articles like the Dorchester Pot for their own use.

Isn’t much more likely?

Hebrews 1:11 tells us that, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."

Their convictions not seen?  Aliens from outer space!
